Liam’s Story

Liam was born on September 21st, 2014 in Wilmington. He was born 6 weeks early and spent his first two weeks in the NICU. Liam had an amazing three months at home until late December when his family realized that something was not right. After taking him to UNC Children’s it was found out that he had a brain tumor. At 3 months old he went through two 12-hour brain surgeries to find out he had a very rare form of brain cancer. His family knew his prognosis was grim but started chemotherapy in January 2015. After battling his cancer for 3 months he lost his battle on April 3rd, 2015.  In his short lifetime he showed unimaginable strength and taught those around him so much. Liam is missed every day and will always be a huge part of his family. This race is held annually to honor him and his legacy and also to give back to UNC Children’s where he was given the most amazing care for the last 3 months of his life.

Today, we would like to acknowledge our friends and community partners at the Liam Strong Charity Beach Run team for their continued support of UNC Children’s!

Their recent event raised over $76,000 for the Liam Fredric Batten Fund for Excellence, which supports our PICU and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology units. This was the 5th annual and most successful event since its inception. Since starting, they have raised over $230,000 to help support UNC Children’s.
